Eco Printing Playtime

This weekend I attended a wonderful Eco Printing workshop at Kim Herringe’s Maleny hinterland studio. Eco Printing involves using plants, paper and/or fabric, and preparing them together with special processes involving chemistry, cooking and the great-unknown!

For a whole day, we experimented with a wide range of eco printing processes, exploring loads different plants, compositions and the blissful unknown of chemistry reactions in eco printing. I found the processes to be very freeing, exploratory and co-creative with Nature in unexpected and interesting ways.

We began by learning some of the theory behind how to make plant prints bond to paper. Then we composed our natural arrangements onto the paper surfaces and wrapped them with string or fabric offcuts, to ensure a good bond to the paper/fabric surface.

They then went into the cooker to seal the deal.

I loved not knowing what would emerge, which plants would print and dye well and which wouldn’t - I found myself holding my breath with anticipation as I unwrapped each bundle.

Needless to say I’m hooked already and excited to keep exploring techniques further! I’m always excited to see how new processes make their way into future classes too.

I love how creativity has the capacity to induce so many emotions and nourishment of our values. I found myself experiencing freedom, anticipation, awe, wonder, community, joy and discovery throughout the day.

It was an absolute pleasure to attend an art class!
